MC & USDOT Number Filing
MC & USDOT Number – Overview
When your business operates commercial vehicles across state lines, you may be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and obtain:
USDOT Number
A unique identifier issued by the FMCSA for companies operating commercial vehicles that:
Transport passengers or cargo across state lines
Transport hazardous materials requiring placards
Have vehicles with a gross weight ≥ 10,001 lbs
This number is used for safety monitoring, inspections, and compliance tracking.
MC (Motor Carrier) Number
Also issued by the FMCSA, an MC Number (Operating Authority) is required if your business:
Carries regulated commodities for hire across state lines
Engages in interstate transportation of passengers or goods
It authorizes your company to operate as a motor carrier under federal law.
When They Are Required
✔ You operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce
✔ You transport goods or passengers for compensation
✔ You haul regulated materials that require special handling
✔ You are a broker, freight forwarder, or leasing authority
Note: If you only operate within one state and do not meet the USDOT criteria, you might not need both numbers — but state-level registration could still apply.
